Even liberal Zionists maintain a red line against Americans calling Israel an apartheid state. Jeremy Ben-Ami says the apartheid “label” will “distract” Israelis and keep them from doing the right thing. But Haaretz writers, desperate about the racism that prevails in their society, refer to apartheid in article after article.

In a dramatic day for the Israeli parliament, legislators failed to renew the extension of an emergency order that affords Jewish Israeli settlers in the West Bank civil governance, while Palestinians in the same area are governed by military rule. This is one of the most blatant Apartheid laws, regularly renewed every five years since Israel began its 1967 occupation. When Palestinian lawmaker Mazen Ghanaim voted against it Nir Orbach of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s party charged at him and shouted that “the experiment with you has failed!” “You” is of course Palestinians in general, and the experiment is the idea of including Palestinians in government.

Zionism not only seeks to dismember Palestinian life and connectedness, but also the threads of signification that nurture steadfastness and resistance.

Even as Australia elected a Labor Prime Minister who opposes BDS and rejects the apartheid label for Israel, the country’s Israel lobby is moving further to the right, agitating against PM Anthony Albanese and backing the conservative coalition in politics. No matter what concessions Labor gives the lobby it will always oppose it. This is because the lobby is accommodating new right-wing voices in Australia and ultra-nationalists in Israel.

A new initiative claiming to combat antisemitism in Canada’s federal service is primarily about defending apartheid. 

Harvard University faculty and officers issue an open letter in support of the Harvard Crimson’s endorsement of BDS, and student efforts to oppose Israeli apartheid. They write to counter a faculty letter deploring the Crimson endorsement in which “the only violence mentioned is that of antisemitism, the only threat identified is to the Jewish national project, and the only vulnerability named is that faced by ‘Jewish and Zionist students.’”

CPAC’s rightwing gathering in Hungary this week was rightly criticized because of the ethnonationalist bigotry of Hungary’s prime minister. But the racist rhetoric Israeli politicians regularly deploy against Palestinians is not very different– they are a demographic threat or deserve another Nakba — and has helped to earn Israel the label of apartheid state. Democrats ought to heed the example, and stay away. But Biden is bound and determined to visit this summer.
