Today, I’m excited to share with you the generous challenge of Mondoweiss supporters who will match the first $2500 we receive in gifts and pledges over the next 24 hours. I need to ask those of you who have not yet given this summer, but who believe in our work—please step up now, and claim the match. Since Ahed Tamimi was arrested, many have donated in her honor to support our work telling her story. Are you ready to help us meet the 24-hour challenge? Your investment in this site enables us to tell the world about all the ways Palestinians work to gain their freedom. Please help us continue this vital work.
Bishop Desmond Tutu wrote about Palestine, “Those of us who lived through the decades of Apartheid South Africa know the transforming power of truth-telling. The act of seeking, and then saying, the truth can help to right persistent wrongs and can even sow the seeds of reconciliation.” This principle is present to us constantly in our work organizing to end the Gaza blockade through our Gaza Unlocked campaign. We know how important stories in the media are to changing public opinion. So we are grateful for Mondoweiss, a resource we use to educate people who want and need the truth about Palestine. Since the beginning of the Great March of Return, Mondoweiss has been even more critical as a news source for people seeking accurate, full information. That’s why we contribute financially — and ask that you join us — to ensure this home of truth-telling not only survives but thrives. Mondoweiss deserves support from you and us — from all who seek a world where human dignity and freedom are valued.
The seamless merger of Zionism with Judaism is the great stumbling block on the road to Palestinian liberation. I know I must continue persuading other Jews that there has to be a better way than colonization, annexation and siege to “straighten out our destiny,” and Mondoweiss helps me do that. I reject the cruel demand that Palestinians forget their history and “move on.” To refute the lies of Zionist narratives, we must invest in the truth—the words and images Mondoweiss publishes every day. Please join me in donating now.
“You wouldn’t last a day if you were in the Gaza Strip,” a young woman in a cap and gown snarled at me several weeks ago. I told her in Gaza I was shown the utmost hospitality despite the appalling conditions in which people were forced to live—and she turned the volume up. “You would be raped and tortured by Hamas. They are all animals!” What could we achieve if someone like this would read Mondoweiss? For eleven years, Gazans have been locked in an open-air prison, and Mondoweiss has enabled their stories to reach us. Because Mondoweiss strengthens my activism, I am pleased to add my voice to those urging you to contribute and help strengthen Mondoweiss, during this summer campaign to raise $60,000.
Akram Al-Wa’ra, Mondoweiss correspondent, writes: “I have witnessed many atrocities in my life here in Palestine. I have seen my friends shot and killed during protests and my family members arrested and thrown in jail. But nothing prepared me for what I witnessed in the footage from Gaza. If it wasn’t for organizations like Mondoweiss, many of these images would never be seen by the international community. My people need Mondoweiss to thrive and grow—please help now.”
The Great March of Return and the hideousness of Israel’s response have demanded as much from Mondoweiss as any events could. Since this mass protest began in March, Mondoweiss has spent nearly twice our usual budget to pay reporters and photographers in Palestine for their brave work documenting this historic action. We are able to respond to urgent news moments like this because readers like you provide the needed resources. Our goal this summer is to raise $60,000 to sustain and grow the Mondoweiss news operation in Palestine. Please donate whatever you can to help Mondoweiss keep the truth flowing from Palestine around the globe.
While those demonstrating in Gaza put themselves at the mercy of an army that has proved itself conscienceless, people like you are investing to make sure the word gets out. The support of hundreds of people committed to truth has allowed Mondoweiss to provide images, reporting and commentary on the Great March of Return. Our current fundraising campaign, Mondoweiss Mondays, has successfully met two challenges of major longtime supporters. The second challenge was fully matched within three days — so yet another donor has now stepped up. In order to keep the momentum for the rest of April, a new match has been offered by a supporter who is pledging $60 for each of the next 25 people who commit to a new recurring donation at any level. Please sign up now to multiply your impact as an investor in truthful reporting from Palestine.
In the past two weeks we’re proud that Mondoweiss has delivered both on-the-ground coverage and insightful commentary to supplement the incomplete and biased reporting by mainstream media. Readers have shown they appreciate our work; donations have poured in. In order to keep the momentum going, a generous donor has pledged $50 for each of the next ten people who commit to a new recurring donation at any level. By signing up now to sustain truthful reporting from Palestine, you can multiply the impact of your support.
You already know that last Friday in Palestine tens of thousands of dedicated Palestinians made their way to the border between Gaza and Israel, and that the Israeli armed forces used snipers to pick off individuals and intimidate nonviolent protesters. Mondoweiss reported from the Great March of Return, and will continue to provide photo, video and oral documentation of this historic statement of sumud—and the atrocities in response. We truly believe that our work reporting on this systematic violence is a vital tool in fighting against it and building a better future. If you agree that truth-telling is mighty and necessary, please consider signing up for a regular contribution to be processed every other week.
